High Commission of Human Rights & Social Justice

Introduction:

“All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights”
Universal Declaration of Human Rights

Who Said?

After all, do universal human rights begin? In small places, close to home – so close and so small that they cannot be seen on any. Map of the world. Yet they are the world of individual person, the neighborhood he lives in, the school or college he attends, the factory or farm or office where he works. Such are the places where every man, woman and child seek equal justice, equal opportunity, and equal dignity without discrimination.  Unless these rights have meanings there, they have little meaning anywhere. Without concerned citizen action to uphold them close to home, we shall look in vain for progress in the larger world.

Quoted by Roosevelt

Human rights are basic rights that belong to all of us simply because we are human. They embody key values in our society such as fairness, dignity, equality, and respect. They are an important means of protection for us all, especially those who many faces abuse, neglect and isolation and they are a necessary means of protection against oppressors and those who would seek to do us harm. In case of poor treatment, they allow us to speak up and advocate for ourselves and others through the legal system.
